… Coldplay, I mean, Joe Satriani, no wait, Coldplay, no, Satriani…
Viva la Vida vs If I Could Fly
The Brit quartet that sells bajillions of records despite songs that are incredibly repetitious, go nowhere and contain nothing remotely resembling a hook won a bunch of Grammys Sunday night. But what of the rumors that the title cut of their latest album is a direct rip off of Joe Satriani?
The fact that Coldplay won multiple Grammys for a song that has the same tempo and groove and virtually identical chord progressions and melodies just proves that the mainstream music biz is as Hunter Thompson put it: The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side.
Apart fron the endless mash-ups of the two songs on YouTube, Andrew Watson from Creative Guitar Studio—a Musician’s Institute grad—has done an in depth analysis of the two songs. For those willing to delve deeper thanthe surface there is some interesting stuff here.
