After 100 million records sold, 47 gold and platinum awards and the first American rock band to chart Top 40 albums in six decades, Chicago continues to make history with a new recording process geared towards the music business of today and the logistical realities of a touring band.
Chicago has built a new recording system that is flexible, portable, powerful and musical. This new recording “rig” travels with the band – so, the new single was developed across a number of locations (mostly hotel rooms), including Nashville & Cleveland and other points across the globe.
Don’t take our word for it …. watch the video:
In this new system, the songwriter is the “supervising producer.” “Somethin’ Comin’, I Know” was written by original Chicago band member Robert Lamm, along with Gerry Beckley (founding member of the band America).
Hank Linderman, long-time writing partner and studio engineer for Robert Lamm and Timothy B. Schmit (Eagles), as well as other successful artists, is the “coordinating producer.” Hank coordinates the multitude of audio takes and files, and brings both organizational input and production musicality to an often complex procedure.
The entire band provides input to the songs and crafts performances in sync with the songwriter. Much effort has gone into perfecting this process. They have even created an online collaboration portal that allows even more performances to be worked on around the clock from remote locations.
As a result, great continuity and creative output have produced a wealth of new material. Numerous songs are now in the pipeline, nearing completion. They will be released one at a time in a “series,” eventually ending up on a CD perhaps, but Chicago remains flexible and adaptable.
The new track is available via Chicago’s website (www.chicagotheband.com), which also offers liner notes by Robert Lamm, artwork, lyrics, etc. The song is also available on Itunes, Amazon, Google Play, Emusic:
A new part of the band’s website is a section called “Premium Access.” Chicago’s legacy and archives of every imaginable type will eventually make its way there. Fans get VIP Access for only .05 cents per day! They can enjoy new Chicago music, well before public release. They get the new track before iTunes, before Amazon, even before Chicago’s own webstore! It costs $19 PER YEAR…$1.58 per month. There is already almost 14 hours of content, with an update every Monday:
Chicago is creatively at a high point, having spent the last three years preparing all the necessary logistics to operate their own record company, Chicago Records II. For a band that in Billboard Magazine’s list of Top 100 artists of all time, came in at #13, the highest charting American band, they really do have “Somethin’ Comin’, I Know.”
