Dear Lis,

I’ve been trying to make a success of my singing career for twelve years. I am starting to feel that it’s like a bad girlfriend.  It keeps leading me on but never makes me happy.  Is it time to split up?

Dear Rob,
That’s a good analogy. It’s hard to know when to give up on a dream. And it’s heartbreaking. This is what you’ve loved all of your life and yet it hasn’t met your expectations. It’s not the singing that’s disappointing you; it’s the career. If there is a way to keep music in your life without tying it to monetary success, it could make you happy again.
