Much has been written over the years about Jerry Harvey and his groundbreaking in-ear monitor designs. From his beginnings with Van Halen to his time establishing Ultimate Ears, his history has been well documented.
One estimate cites 80% of all IEM users are using products that Jerry either influenced or designed. And while it may appear that Jerry “left the building,” in live sound, nothing could be further from the truth. In 2007 he founded a new company called JH Audio that targets the aviation headset market. A pilot since 2003, Harvey manufactures aviation products that feature high quality mics and custom earpieces allowing for clearer in-flight communications.
It has been said about music, “Once that bug bites, you live with the sting.” A phone call from a former client convinced Jerry that the time was right to get back in the live sound market and soon Jerry was back designing in-ear monitors for the touring world. Currently based out of Apopka, Florida, Harvey feels that there is room for improvement in the IEM industry. “The IEMs that I designed between 1995 and 2007, in my opinion, are dated (old) technology. “I have had ideas for a new generation of products and this is the perfect time to deliver them to the marketplace.”
The first product entry, introduced in June of 2009, from JH Audio was the JH 13, which was quickly put into service with artists including Lady Gaga, Linkin Park, and Mick Jones from Foreigner. The JH 13 took 18 months to develop and features dual driver technology. It has a three-way crossover with dual drivers on the low, mid and high bands. It is the first six-driver earpiece from any IEM manufacturer.
The response from customers to the company’s reemergence and the JH 13s is extremely positive and reviews run from “wordy” (3600 word review in the audiophile newsletter, “Head-Fi”) to the succinct from John “Elmo” Sheldon, currently touring with Guns & Roses, “JH13’s are a perfect combination of quality and innovation. It’s great to have a trendsetter like Jerry back in the industry.
