For years I had been sporadically scheduling lessons with students around my tour dates and at one time had seriously considered involving myself in the extended guitar workshops that were being offered around the country. But I could never quite figure where I would fit in with workshops that featured several teachers, as I wanted to spend a lot of time on specific topics that were built upon each other.

Since I have always been as fond of teaching as I am of writing and performing, I finally just made up my own camp, which initially catered to friends and local players.

GillaCamp was officially launched 2005 in Tampa, Florida, and I was pleasantly surprised that some of my first attendees flew in from Massachusetts and Colorado – giving the GillaCamp concept much hope!

The fate of any new endeavor can be witnessed beyond the obvious adjustments that were made over time. I’m very thankful that today GillaCamp seems to be an actual product that travels on the road with me around the world.

Since the birth of GillaCamp, I actually have been involved with these festival-type workshops, as recently as the 2009 Healdburg Guitar Festival (http://www.festivalofguitars.com). I just tailor my agenda to fit into the time restraints of these group camps, using the GillaCamp Gourmet menu of several topics that can stand alone for a1-hour format or be tied together for 3 full days of instruction.
