The list of pop and American Songbook standards that provide the perfect soundtrack for Valentine’s Day is varied and endless. But what I wanted to know was, “What are the love songs that musicians really enjoy singing and playing?” I know I have my own personal favorites, but what are yours?
I figured that if anyone would know, it would be a Website that tracks the sale of sheet music, and Musicnotes.com is the world’s top sheet music e-retailer and publisher. Theoretically, the songs with the most sheet music downloads should be month the most popular with singers and players.
Commenting on the list, Kathleen Marsh, CEO and Co-Founder of Musicnotes.com said, “Music is certainly about passion, and these love songs capture a wide range of romance, emotion and passion, this list shows us that musicians, from beginner to professional, enjoy playing songs that highlight the many aspects of love.”Like any top ten list, the list has it’s expectations and surprises. Barely making the list at #10, was “Little Things” by One Direction. “I See The Light” from the Disney film “Tangled” was #9. In the #8 spot was “For Good” from the Broadway musical “Wicked.”
No top ten love song list would be complete with out one of the all-time favorite songs for the bride’s walk to the alter, so it’s no surprise at all to see Pachelbel’s “Canon In D” as #7. What is surprising is that this beautiful masterpiece, written prior to 1700, was virtually undiscovered until published in 1919. It has remained popular ever since.
#6 on the goes to “Wanted” by Hunter Hayes, preceded by #5, Rhianna’s 2012 hit “Diamonds.”
“At Last,” was recorded by Etta James in 1960 and it remains just as popular as ever as the 4th most frequently downloaded. Mr. AZ, Jason Mraz held the #3 spot with “I Won’t Give Up.” #2 was Adele’s “To Make Me Feel.” And the #1 song with the most sheet music downloads according to musicnotes.com is “A Thousand Years”, from Christina Perri.
Launched in 1998, Musicnotes.com offers nearly 250,000 officially licensed downloadable sheet music arrangements. The company’s vast digital catalogue includes pieces for almost every instrument and skill level, including hard-to-find sheet music no longer in print production.
