New Bass Gear From NAMM 2014

This year’s winter NAMM was just what I expected. Lots of rock stars, lots of walking (8 miles of it for me) and of course tons of gear.

V- 4B Head SVT-112AV 020114Having missed the Ampeg booth last year, I made it a personal mission to attack it early for 2014.  Dino Monoxelos was there showing of the Ampeg V4b 100-watt tube head  and two matching 112 AV cabinets.

Ampeg’s name is synonymous is great bass gear, largely because the famous (and monsterous) SVT head and matching cabinet with eight 10” speakers…some bassists used 2 cabinets, but did you know the company’s name is based off of a pickup that was suspended inside an upright acoustic bass?

This product was an amplified peg (Am-peg) that replaced the bass’ original endpin floor peg.

Look for a review on the V4b and matching cabinets here soon.

In other amplifier news, Madison amps are back in production.  The company is now under new ownership, and one of the more intriguing new products they are offer is a 500-watt bass amp that weighs a mere 12 pounds.  As a player that lugs his own gear, this holds a large amount of appeal…and I’m hoping to get my hands on one soon.

There were also a few small companies that make some really cool products:

Loxx Set Chrome 020114

13605 BLUE BACKGROUND WITH FELTSLOXX is a new strap lock company that is from Germany.

They have come up with a lock system that you can operate with one hand and also have eliminated all the washers.  Cool.

earplugs_pro 020114Another company I thought was fairly hip was Thunderplugs.  They make a really nice set of inexpensive earplugs…hearing filters, actually, as they allow sound through to your ear at a reduced volume.  I used them the whole show and was still able to talk and hear people without having to take them out like the foam ones.  What I really liked was the comfort and the price.

tech 21 bass pedals 2014 020114Over at the Tech 21 NYC both I found company rep Dale Krevans.  Among the company’s cool offerings was a pair of new bass pedals: the Bass Boost Fuzz and the Bass Boost Chorus.  Look for a review on these shortly…but in the interim be sure to check out my review of the Tech 21 VT Bass DI: http://l2pnet.com/Tech_21_VT_Bass_DI_Review
