Highlights from Bruce Springsteen SXSW Keynote

Rock icon Bruce Springsteen just wrapped up his SXSW Keynote and I thought that some of his quotes were so good that I must share! Enjoy! —Linda

    ON HIS INSPIRATIONS:

"On Motown - I learned how to write, to play, what to leave in, what to leave out, how to lead a band. "

Springsteen plays an acoustic verse from The Animals' 'We Gotta Get Out Of This Place,' says it's every song he's ever written."Listen up youngsters, this is how successful theft is accomplished."

"Why do we still talk about Woody Guthrie? Never a had a hit, or sold out an arena. He's THE ghost in the machine. "

    ON BOB DYLAN:

"Bob (Dylan) is the father of my musical country, now and forever, and I thank him.”

“Dylan gaves us the words to understand our hearts. He didn’t treat you like a child.”

"He can sing verse after verse and never bore you. "

"Dylan wrote about everything that mattered at once" ~ Springsteen #SXSW

    ON COUNTRY MUSIC:

At first country just sounded cranky to me..then my ears became accustomed to its beautiful simplicity, darkness & death"

"Hank Williams was the grim recognition of the chips laid down against you.”

"Country is the truth coming out of your sweat. It asked 'Why is there a hole in my bucket?'

"Country music seemed not to question why, but doing, then dying, screwing, then crying, boozing, then trying."

    ON BEING A MUSICIAN:

"I was an average guy with a slightly above average gift & if I worked my ass off..."

"We live in a post-authentic world. At the end of the day it’s the power and purpose of your music that still matters."

"Have ironclad confidence. And doubt. It keeps you awake and alert."

" Don't take yourself seriously. But take yourself seriously. Don't worry. Worry your ass off. Stay hard, hungry, alive."

“Musicians: believe that you are the baddest ass in town, and that you suck. It keeps you honest.”

"when you're onstage bring it like that's all you got - and remember - it's only rock n roll."
